When I was younger, I was taught that all races were equal. I was taught that the substance of a person’s character had nothing to do with the color of their skin.
That was the 90’s and early 2000’s.
Today, however, I feel like the notion of all races being truly equal is under attack. Instead of promoting equality by “color-blindness”, the current modus operandi is “white shaming”.Is it bad to be white? Well, apparently, to be white is to be racist. To be white is to be rich, entitled and hateful. To be white is to be boring and ignorant. It is to be completely devoid of real life experiences and true wisdom.
Is this really what we want to be teaching our kids? That some people are inherently different or bad just because of the color of their skin? That stereotyping is okay? Isn’t this the exact thing that we have been trying to get rid of in our society?
Sadly, some white people have done some seriously horrible things (and still do), but what ethnic group has 100% perfect people? You can’t judge an individual’s heart based on the actions of those that look similar.
If we really want to teach our kids racial equality, we have to teach them that all races are equal. Period.
